ANZPRA satellite meetings

ANZPRA holds an annual satellite meeting immediately proceeding or after the Society for Reproductive Biology Annual Conference each year (see the SRB conference website for more details). These satellite meetings showcase the broad range of fantastic placental research being undertaken in Australia and New Zealand.

Details of our previous satellites can be found at the end of this page.

Suggestions from the local organising committee:

Fremantle is a special place, recently voted Australia’s Best Tourism Town 2025! Here’s a great overview of why and what to do in Freo, and below are a few other recommendations from Caitlin, a Freo local:

Pre-ANZPRA meeting adventures (especially if you're shaking off SRB festivities):

  • Bather’s Beach via the old whaling tunnel under the Roundhouse (Freo’s first convict prison)

  • South Beach sauna, a beachside sauna 2.5km run or walk from central Freo (or Uber it). Best to book in advance.

  • Leighton Beach (short walk from North Fremantle train station).

  • Peggy’s for quality greasy food, followed by a wander through the West End’s op shops, New Edition bookshop, and Moore & Moore Gallery. Also Paperbird Bookstore (great for kids - there’s a Narnia wardrobe leading to a secret book room!).

  • If you’re into ceramics, the Fremantle Arts Centre currently has an exhibition of Western Australian ceramic artists. The grounds are lovely and the café pleasant.

Food & drink highlights:

  • Vin Populi, Cassia, Ode to Sirens, Chi Cho (ice cream!), The Old Synagogue (variety of venues)

  • Twin Fin Fish & Chips for sunset takeaway by the ocean

  • Good Things (coffee), Aunty Lucy’s (cake), National Hotel (rooftop bar), Republic of Fremantle (gin distillery), Darling Darling (tiny pirate bar), Sail & Anchor, Little Creatures (for beer lovers).

  • Little French Nest or Common Bakery (breakfast). Gino’s for breakfast is a decades-old Fremantle institution.

  • Further out in South Freo is Madalena’s, La Cabana, Wild Bakery, Little Loaf, Sea Lanes, Running with Thieves.

And if you’re staying on after the meeting, a ferry trip to Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) is a great day trip.
